What editing means here

You already have a full draft. The argument is made, the research is done, the paragraphs exist in some order, maybe a rough one. What you are not sure about is whether the writing itself holds up: whether the sentences are doing what you meant them to do, whether a professor reading it will trip over a comma splice or a citation in the wrong format. That is what an editing order fixes. Nobody sits down to write your essay again from a blank page. An editor opens the file you send, reads it the way your instructor will, and corrects what is getting in the way of the ideas you already had.

This matters because it changes what you should expect back. You will not get a different essay. You will get your essay, with the friction removed, and with the parts that were slowing a reader down taken out of their way. If a sentence ran on for sixty words and lost its own subject halfway through, it gets split and tightened. If a paragraph buried its point in the third sentence instead of the first, the order gets adjusted. None of that touches what you argued. It touches how clearly you argued it.

Editing versus Proofreading

The order form lists Editing and Proofreading as separate paper types, and picking the wrong one either wastes money on work you did not need or leaves problems untouched that needed a heavier hand. Both run on the same 3 hour to 10 day deadline range, so the choice between them is about depth, not speed.

Proofreading is the shallow pass. It catches typos, misplaced punctuation, subject-verb agreement, spelling, and inconsistent formatting like a font that changes halfway through the document. It does not touch how a sentence is built or how paragraphs connect to each other, and it will not reorganize a confusing argument.

Editing goes further. It includes everything Proofreading covers, plus sentence structure, word choice, clarity, transitions between paragraphs, and citation formatting to a specific style guide. If your draft has a typo problem and nothing else, order Proofreading and it costs less for the same page count. If your draft has a typo problem and also reads awkwardly in places, repeats the same three words in every paragraph, or jumps between ideas without a bridge, order Editing.

A third option sits next to both in the form: Admission Services - Editing, built specifically for personal statements, scholarship essays and admission essays, with the same deadline range. If that is what you are submitting, the admission essay page covers it in full. This page is for coursework, essays written for a class, and other academic writing that is not part of an application file.

What an editor changes and what an editor leaves alone

Gets changed

Grammar and punctuation errors, including comma splices, subject-verb agreement, and misused apostrophes

Sentence structure that is awkward, overloaded, or unclear on a first read

Word choice and repetition, where the same word or phrase gets leaned on too often

Paragraph transitions and the overall flow from one idea to the next

Citation formatting, both in-text and in the reference list

Formatting details like heading style, spacing and font where they do not match what the assignment calls for

Stays as you wrote it

Your thesis or argument, whatever position you took

The research and sources you chose to use

The structure of your reasoning, paragraph by paragraph content and the order you built it in

Any claims or interpretations you made, including ones an editor might not personally agree with

The overall length and scope of the essay

If a paragraph’s logic has a real gap, something is asserted without evidence, or a transition papers over a jump that should not be papered over, the editor notes it in a comment rather than rewriting around it. Filling that gap is your call, not the editor’s, because it is your grade and your name on the essay.

Matching your citation style

Tell the editor which style your assignment requires and both the in-text citations and the reference list get checked and corrected against it. That covers APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, Harvard, Oxford, Vancouver, CSE, or another style named in your instructions. This is usually the part students skip when writing a draft under deadline pressure, mixing APA in-text citations with a reference list that never got built, or switching formats halfway through because sources got added at different points in the writing process, some early with careful notes and some at 2am with none.

The edit brings all of it into one consistent style, matched to what your professor actually asked for rather than whatever format the essay happened to drift into. That includes details easy to get wrong by hand: hanging indents on a reference list, the order authors are listed in, whether a source needs a page number in-text or only in the bibliography, how to cite a source with no named author.

If your assignment did not specify a style, say so in your instructions and note whatever your department or field defaults to instead, since a history course and a psychology course rarely expect the same one. An editor working blind on citation style will guess wrong as often as right, and fixing a wrong guess later costs you a revision cycle you did not need to spend.

What to send with your essay

  1. The draft itself, as a complete file rather than a partial one. An editor working on half an essay cannot judge how the ending answers the opening, and cannot fix a transition into a section they never saw.
  2. The citation style your assignment requires, named specifically, APA seventh edition rather than just APA, if your course uses a particular edition.
  3. Any rubric, assignment sheet or instructor notes you have, especially if a professor already flagged specific issues on earlier work, like a habit of run-on sentences or inconsistent tense.
  4. Word or page count limits, if your assignment sets one, so the edit does not push the essay over a cap you have to respect.

The editor works from what you send. An essay with no rubric attached still gets a competent edit built on grammar, clarity and structure. An essay with the actual grading criteria attached gets one aimed specifically at what will be marked, which matters most when a rubric weights something particular, like use of primary sources or adherence to a word limit, heavily enough to move a grade on its own.

Deadlines and what they mean for an edit

Editing deadlines run from 3 hours up to 10 days: 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 7 days, or 10 days. The order form shows the maximum page count allowed for whichever deadline you pick before you pay, and that cap narrows as the deadline shortens, so a five page essay due in 3 hours and a twenty page one due in 3 hours are not both going to be options.

At 3 hours, on a short essay of a page or two, the editor works fast through essentially one pass: grammar corrections, the most obvious structural fixes, citation formatting brought into line. There is time to catch what is broken but not much time to weigh alternate phrasing for a sentence that is merely dull rather than wrong, or to restructure a weak paragraph beyond the minimum needed to make its point land. At 24 to 48 hours, a typical undergraduate essay running a few thousand words gets a fuller pass, with room to reconsider transitions between sections and to flag logic gaps in a comment rather than just patch grammar and move on.

Past 3 days, on longer or denser essays, the kind running past 3,000 words or carrying heavy citation work with dozens of sources, the process gets the most thorough version available. That includes time for the editor to reread the whole essay after making changes, checking that a fix made on page two did not create an inconsistency by page eight, rather than editing straight through once and stopping.

If you are choosing between a short deadline and a longer one and the essay is not due for another week, the longer deadline buys a more careful edit for the identical request, at no cost to you beyond the wait. If the deadline is fixed by your class and there is no flexibility, the form tells you before payment exactly what page count that deadline supports, so there are no surprises after you submit and no essay gets accepted into a slot it cannot actually fit.

When editing is not enough

Some drafts need more than an edit can give them. If the essay is missing required sections entirely, if the research does not actually support the thesis rather than just needing better phrasing, if a professor’s feedback points at the argument itself rather than at the writing, or if the draft is a rough outline dressed up in full sentences rather than a developed essay, editing will not close that gap. An editor is not going to write new body paragraphs, go find new sources, or build an argument that was never in your draft to begin with. That is a different kind of work with a different paper type behind it.

If that sounds closer to where you are, having a writer build the essay from scratch to your assignment brief is the better order. Custom essay writing and buying an essay written to your requirements both cover that ground. It is not a heavier version of editing, it is a different service entirely, and ordering it directly saves you a revision cycle spent discovering partway through that editing could not do what the draft actually needed.

If you are not sure which side of that line your own draft falls on, describe the specific feedback you got, or the specific problem you keep running into, when you place the order or before you place it. Support can help point you to the right paper type ahead of payment, reachable through WhatsApp chat or by email at support@bestessay.com, both answered in writing around the clock. What you should not do is order Editing hoping it quietly turns into something bigger once the editor sees the file. It will not stretch that way, and knowing the boundary before you order is better than finding it after a deadline has already passed.

Frequently asked questions

Will the editor change my argument or add new ideas?

No. The editor works with the argument you already made and the research you already did. If a claim needs more support or a paragraph needs restructuring for logic, the editor will flag it, but the thinking stays yours.

How do I know if I need Editing or Proofreading?

Proofreading catches surface errors like typos, punctuation and spelling. Editing goes further into sentence structure, clarity and flow, and includes citation formatting. If your draft reads roughly right but needs a final check, choose Proofreading. If sentences feel clunky or the paragraphs do not flow, choose Editing.

Can the editor fix my citations if I used the wrong style?

Yes. Tell the editor which style your assignment requires, APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, Harvard, Oxford, Vancouver, CSE or another named style, and both the in-text citations and the reference list will be converted to match.

What if my essay needs more than editing can fix?

Sometimes a draft has gaps in the research or the argument itself that no amount of line editing will close. In that case a writer can complete the essay from scratch to your brief. See custom essay writing or buying an essay for that option.

How fast can an essay be edited?

Deadlines for Editing run from 3 hours up to 10 days. The shorter the deadline, the fewer pages the order form allows for that turnaround, and it shows the cap before you pay.

Will the edited essay still sound like me?

Yes. The editor works inside your sentences and your word choices where possible, correcting what is wrong rather than replacing your voice with theirs. The goal is an essay that reads as a cleaner version of what you wrote, not someone else's essay.

What should I send along with my draft?

Send the essay file itself, the citation style your assignment requires, and any rubric or instructor notes you have. The editor works to the same standard your essay will be graded against, so the more of that you provide, the more useful the edit.

Can I talk to the editor directly while the order is in progress?

Yes, through the thread on the order in your account. That thread is the only way to reach the person working on your essay. WhatsApp and email reach support, not the editor.

Does editing include proofreading too?

Editing covers grammar and mechanics as part of the broader pass on sentence structure, clarity and flow, so you are not left with typos once the bigger issues are fixed. If all you need is that surface check with nothing else touched, order Proofreading instead and it will cost less for the same page count.

What happens if I am not happy with the edit?

You get free revisions within 14 days of delivery, as long as the revision request stays within your original instructions. A quality complaint with specific examples from the text can also be raised within 72 hours of delivery for Quality Control to review.

Will editing guarantee my essay gets accepted or gets a better grade?

No service can promise an admission decision or a grade, and BestEssay does not claim to. What you get is a cleaner, better organized version of your own essay to submit under your school's or program's rules.

Is there a version of this for admission essays specifically?

Yes. Admission essays, personal statements and scholarship essays have their own paper type in the order form, Admission Services - Editing, with the same 3 hour to 10 day deadline range. Details are on the admission essay page.

How much does essay editing cost?

The price depends on paper length, academic level, quality tier, spacing and deadline, calculated live in the order form. Get a live figure at the price calculator or read how it is built at the pricing page.

Can I request the same editor for a future essay?

Enter that person's writer ID in the Preferred Writer's ID field on a later order. The form shows the price for that once you enter the ID, since choosing a specific writer is a paid option rather than something you can note in the instructions.
