What custom actually means here
A custom essay starts empty. The writer opens your order, reads your assignment sheet and rubric, and builds the paper from that, sentence by sentence, for the topic and angle you specified. That is the opposite of adapted work, where someone takes a paper already written on a nearby topic and edits it to sound like it fits. Adapted work shows up around the edges: an example that answers a slightly different question, a structure that matches a rubric from a different course, a thesis that is close but not quite yours. Custom work has none of that drift because there was nothing to start from except your brief.
This matters most in the parts of an essay that generic writing can’t fake: a thesis that responds to your specific prompt, body paragraphs that engage the sources your professor assigned rather than sources that happen to be about the same subject, and conclusions that answer the actual question on the assignment sheet. Custom is a claim about where the paper started, not a flavor of quality. The rest of this page is about what your writer needs from you to make that claim true in practice, not just in theory.
Briefing the writer so the essay fits the rubric
A writer working from a thin brief has to guess, and a guess that turns out wrong is what a revision then has to fix. Hand over what you have before the writer starts, not after.
- The assignment sheet itself, not a summary of it in your own words. Professors bury requirements in phrasing that looks incidental and isn’t.
- The grading rubric, if one exists. It tells the writer what earns marks, which is not always the same as what the assignment sheet emphasizes.
- Course readings or lecture material the essay is expected to draw on. If your professor wants you engaging with a specific textbook chapter or a set of assigned articles, say so and attach them.
- Any notes from the professor that clarify or narrow the topic, including anything said in class that isn’t on the written brief.
- A sample of your own past writing, if you want the tone to sound like you rather than like a generic academic register.
None of this goes into an order form field labeled for it exactly. Attach the files and put the specifics in the instructions box. If you realize partway through writing your order that you’re missing the rubric, submit what you have and add the rest through the message thread once you find it, rather than delaying the whole order to track down one document.
The settings that tailor the order
Academic level changes how the essay argues, not just how long it runs. A high school level essay is expected to demonstrate command of a topic in fairly direct terms. An undergraduate essay is expected to engage counterarguments and cite sources properly. A master’s or PhD level essay is expected to work with theoretical frameworks and situate its argument against existing scholarship, and the writer assigned to it works at that register throughout. Choosing the wrong level either makes the essay read as too simple for the course or, just as often, over-complicated in a way that doesn’t match the rest of your coursework.
Citation style is not cosmetic. APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, Harvard, Oxford, Vancouver, CSE, or any other style you name in the instructions, changes how sources are introduced in the text as well as how the reference list is formatted. A history essay in Chicago reads differently on the page than the same essay in MLA, because Chicago pushes citation into footnotes and leaves the prose uninterrupted, while MLA keeps parenthetical citations inline. Pick the one your professor actually requires, since a correct essay in the wrong style still reads as wrong to a grader who is checking for it.
The number and type of sources you specify shape how much research underpins the essay’s claims. An essay built on three assigned sources reads differently from one drawing on twelve, and if your professor prefers peer-reviewed journal articles over general web sources, or wants a minimum publication year, say so in the instructions. The writer works from what you specify. Left unstated, the writer chooses sources appropriate to the topic and academic level.
Quality level and what it changes
Standard, Premium and Platinum are the three quality levels the order form offers, and what each one includes for an essay is set out in detail on Prices. The distinction worth understanding here is that quality level and brief are two different levers. Quality level governs the level of service around the paper. The brief governs the paper’s content: your topic, your rubric, your sources. A Platinum order built on a two-line brief will still be a competent essay, but it will be competent on a topic the writer had to interpret rather than one you specified in detail. A Standard order built on a thorough brief, complete assignment sheet, rubric, readings, will hit your specific requirements more precisely than a higher quality level ordered with less information attached. If you want both a closely matched paper and the service level Platinum provides, the brief still does the work quality level can’t do for you.
The extras that narrow who writes it
A handful of paid options on the order form affect who ends up writing your essay, separate from the academic level and quality level settings.
- Top 10 Writers sends the order to a writer ranked among the best by subject survey results and customer feedback, rather than to any writer qualified at your chosen academic level. Add this if the subject matter is specialized or you want a stronger command of the field specifically, not just competent execution.
- A writer in British English produces the essay in British spelling and phrasing throughout, rather than American. Useful if your course or institution expects it, though note this service serves the US market primarily and British English is an add-on rather than a default for non-US orders.
- Requesting a preferred writer lets you name a specific writer from an earlier order by entering their writer ID in the Preferred Writer’s ID field. The form shows the price for that option once you enter the ID. This is the only way to get the same writer twice. You cannot request someone by name in a note or in the instructions box.
None of these three is required, and none of them substitutes for a good brief. They narrow who writes the paper. They don’t change what the paper needs to say, which is still entirely a function of your instructions.
What original honestly means
Original, in a custom order, means the essay is written newly for you and has not been published or resold to anyone else. Nothing delivered to your account started as a file sitting in a folder waiting for a matching order. The paper is checked before it’s sent to you, and every order is treated as its own piece of work rather than a variation on something already written.
What original does not mean is a guarantee about how any particular plagiarism checker will score it. Small incidental overlaps with existing text can happen in any piece of academic writing, particularly around common phrasing, source quotations and standard terminology in a field. Nobody at BestEssay will tell you the paper will score zero on a detector, or that it will clear a specific checker your university uses, because neither claim would be honest. If you want a record of an originality check attached to your order, the plagiarism report is available as a paid extra and is issued once per order.
What you receive is meant to serve as a model for your own research, a reference point for work you produce yourself, and how you use it against your school’s own academic integrity policy is your responsibility. The Terms set out what the order covers.
If the brief changes after you order
- Open your account and go to the message thread for that specific order. This is the only channel that reaches the writer directly, not WhatsApp and not email, both of which reach support rather than the person writing your paper.
- State exactly what changed. If the professor updated the rubric, attach the new version rather than describing the change in your own words, since writers work more reliably from the actual document.
- Send it as early as you can relative to the deadline. A change sent with days to go can usually be worked in without friction. A change sent an hour before a 3 hour deadline may not be, simply because there isn’t time left to rework already-written sections.
- If the deadline itself needs to move because the new information requires more work than the original timeline allows, raise that in the same thread, and support will let you know before the deadline if a delay is coming rather than after it’s already passed.
- Once the paper is delivered, use the 14 day revision window for anything that falls inside your original instructions. A rubric change you never told the writer about at the time doesn’t count as a revision, since a revision has to stay within the brief the writer actually had. Genuinely new instructions at that stage are a separate, paid editing request.
Questions about how any of this fits your particular order are answered fastest through Contact or the account message thread itself, both staffed around the clock in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What does custom essay actually mean at BestEssay?
It means the writer starts from your assignment sheet and rubric and writes to them, rather than pulling from an existing paper on a similar topic. The finished essay is produced for your order only, checked before delivery, and not published or resold afterward.
How much of my professor's instructions do I need to upload?
As much as you have. The assignment sheet and rubric are the minimum, and course readings or professor notes remove the guesswork a writer would otherwise have to fill in with a general assumption about the topic.
Can I add instructions after I have already paid?
Yes, through the message thread attached to your order, and the earlier you do it relative to the deadline the more of it the writer can use. See the section on what to do if the brief changes.
Will the writer definitely follow my citation style?
Yes. You choose the style on the order form, APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, Harvard, Oxford, Vancouver, CSE or another one you name in the instructions, and the writer works to that style throughout.
What is the shortest deadline for an essay?
Three hours. At that deadline the order form caps the paper at 3 pages, and the caps loosen as the deadline extends: 4 pages at 6 hours, 8 at 12 hours, 12 at 24 hours, 19 at 48 hours, 40 at 3 days. Longer deadlines are not capped this way.
Does a higher quality level mean a better writer?
It changes what the order includes rather than swapping in a different tier of expertise. What each quality level covers is set out in full on Prices, and the only setting that promises a subject specialist by name is the Top 10 Writers extra.
Can I request the same writer I had last time?
Yes. Enter that writer's ID in the Preferred Writer's ID field on the order form. It is a paid option, priced by the form the moment you enter the ID.
Is a custom essay guaranteed to be plagiarism free?
The paper is written newly for your order and not copied from an existing file. Nobody in this business states a percentage or promises a paper will clear every checker, and a plagiarism report can be added as a paid extra if you want one on file.
What if I forgot to mention something important when I ordered?
Message the writer directly through your account's message thread as soon as you notice, before the deadline passes if at all possible. It is the only channel that reaches the person writing the paper.
Can the writer log into my school portal to check the rubric themselves?
No. Nobody working on your order logs into your school account, and everything the writer works from has to come through the order instructions and the files you attach.
How do I get a subject expert instead of a general writer?
Add the Top 10 Writers option on the order form. Without it, your paper goes to a writer qualified for the academic level you chose; with it, the order goes specifically to one of the writers ranked highest by subject survey and customer feedback.
What happens if my professor asks for a change after delivery?
If the request stays inside your original instructions, it qualifies as a free revision within 14 days of delivery. If it adds something new that was not in the brief, it counts as a paid editing request rather than a revision.
Does British English cost extra or is it automatic for non-US orders?
It is a paid extra you select on the order form, not automatic based on your country. Choose it if your course or professor specifically expects British spelling and phrasing.
Can I see exactly what a custom essay from BestEssay looks like?
Yes, browse the sample essays published on the site. They show structure and style, not your topic, since a genuinely custom paper only exists once your own brief is attached to an order.
